That's a shame Katey, although I've yet to hear a good thing said about On the Road. In fact it was a booby prize at one of our book group xmas parties!

My second of the year done for Feb: Choke by Chuck Palahnuik. Very unusual and quite extreme but I actually really quite liked it.
Might try London Fields by Martin Amis for March, have had the book years! |

I read London Fields years ago Sarah and remember feeling strange reading it. Could do with reading it again now I'm older and wiser (I hope) as some of it went over my head!! _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

Finished Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas this morning so that's 3 for me this year so far. Not sure whether I liked it or not. It took some getting into; I was halfway through before I started to enjoy it. I didn't find it funny (as the reviews suggest it is), just crazy and surreal and disorienting. I quite liked some of the mad drug-fuelled scrapes they got themselves into with hotel maids and the like, and how they scammed their way out of them. I read that the book is about the collapse of the American dream, which I definitely got the feel of whilst reading. So beyond the crazy drug-induced escapades, there is a deeper meaning to the story (as there often is, but much of the book at the beginning left me wondering what the point of the story was).
I give it 3.5 stars. Mostly for Ralph Steadman's illustrations. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

Fear & Loathing... is another I have tried and given up on ... drug stories just get boring for me- remember kids it's not big and it's not clever !
Finished No. 3- Brideshead Revisited - my favourite of the year (so far) ! _________________ Current reading: The Last Temptation, Val McDermid ~ 40 @2009

You're so right! Definitely not big or clever! The characters were a real mess as you can imagine. Might watch the film tonight to see how it compares to the book. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

Not really Wonderlake, what gave it away?
Another one off the list for me: The Lambs of London by Peter Ackroyd - definately recommended, plus its only 200 pages
That makes 2 for me this year. _________________ Currently reading: Man in the Dark by Paul Auster |

I'm still on 2 this year so far too, which is awful. But life has meant light reading only on the agenda. Still might do London Fields next!
And I'm not sure about the Peter Ackroyd, I read The House of Dr Dee for the challenge last year and hated it, though I have a friend who loves his work too. Certainly don't think I'll be spending hard earned cash to obtain that one!! |

As my reading has ground to a halt atm, I've not been doing very well with the 1001 reading challenge either. I read 14 last year and was hoping to get closer to 20 this year. Now we're at the end of July I really need to get my skates on if that's going to be achievable. However having recently finished Gone with the Wind I can take my current total for 2009 up to 4....
1. Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
2. Wild Swans – Jung Chang
3. The Clockwork Orange – Anthony Burgess
4. Gone With The Wind – Margaret Mitchell _________________ Currently Reading:

My next book needs to be a 1001 book, I have let it slip very badly and if I am going to reach my target I need to get a wriggle on! _________________ Katey

10. Love's Work by Gillian Rose
11. The Old man and the Sea- Ernest Hemingway
Sometimes I wonder about this list as I haven't enjoyed many that I have read this year.....
