Frost in May - Antonia White 10/10
Love it love it!

This is one of my all time favourites Charlie - I first read it in 1982 when I saw the excellent tv adaptation and I then had to read all of the quartet although Frost in May remains my favourite.  I'm delighted to see someone else enjoying it!

It was great! I've had it for ages but never read it and now I can't believe I left it so long. I've got the others too so I'll be getting on to them asap!

I haven't finished any books I started this month. Still reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson. It's taken me a while to get into it as I wasn't entirely sure what was going on, why, who etc., but I'm starting to get to grips with it now I'm over halfway through. Have the film to watch afterwards. It's ok. And if anyone can explain Gonzo journalism to me, I'd be very grateful!!

Tried to get into Midwives by Chris Bohjalian, but gave up. Found the writing a bit too flowery after finishing VGL. Haven't given up on it totally though. Will wait til I'm in the mood for it.

F&L in LL was , for me, unusually a better movie than book and not just cos of Johnny Depp, it was just funnier and seemed to make (slightly) more sense.
I loved Midwives!! Now collecting to read ALL his others,xx

Bad Friends bv Claire Seeber 5/10 - didn't like the style and the constant references throughout as to ''what happened last summer'', but making you wait the whole book to find out what actually happened, seemed lazy.

Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith 10/10 - fantastic atmosphere, great historical crime thriller set in Stalin's Russia, must get the next in series! Book of the month!

The Life of Hunger byAmelie Nothomb 5/10 - ok, but sometimes a bit dry.

The Ghost and Mrs.McClure by Alice Kimberly 7/10 - ok cosy whodunnit, but conversations with the ghost got on my nerves after a while.

Julius Winsome by Gerald Donovan 8/10 - very atmospheric, that place would have driven me mad too. A lonely man takes desperate measures after his only companion, a dog, is inexplicably killed.

The End of the Alphabet by C.S.Richardson 4/10 - didn't really understand this.

Netherland by Joseph O'Neill -gave up....life is too short.

Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto 6/10 - ok short stories.

Dear John by Nicholas Sparks 7/10 - typical romantic fare from Mr.Sparks, though more interesting than usual as set around 9/11.

The Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry 7/10 - something was missing for me in this. Should have loved it but never really cared about characters.

Moon Opera by Bi Feiyu 4/10 - anothr one i never really 'got'.

The Calling by Inger Ash Wolfe 6/10 - ok, but a bit forgetable crime/thriler.

West of the Wall
by Marcia Preston 5/10 - must stop reading her, don't really like her books, still have one on tbr though.

Dope
by Sara Gran 7/10 - good, noir style crime thriller set in 1930's, ex-heroin addict hired by parents of missing girl to return to drug underworld she's familiar with.

Frankie and Stankie by Barbara Trapido - gave up....wasn't going anywhere i thought.

A Dark Dividing
by Sarah Rayne 7/10 - good thriller with supernatural element.

The Deep End of the Ocean by Jacquelyn Mitchard 8/10 - enjoyed this story of a family struggling with the disappearance of their young son and his return 9 years later.

Blindness
by Jose Saramago 8/10 - a weird world where everyone is becoming blind, great story of how society quickly crumbles. Style sometimes feels like a study in human nature though, perhaps that's why it won the Nobel prize.

Let It Be Morning by Sayed Kashua 9/10 - great story of what it means to be an arab Israeli and want to remain one.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson 8/10 - can't believe this book really was written in 1938!! A woman with multiple partners, nightclubs, references to cocaine!! Excellent, but the anti-foreign prejudices in it did marr it a little for me and date it.

Tethered by Amy MacKinnon 10/10 - great book, loved this. Loved the style and characters. Will look out for more by her.

Dare I say it, I'm not surprised - you need to get some sort of classification system a la Dewey to sort out where and what books you have!!  You could give your local library a run for their money - ever think of loaning for small reservation fees?!  You'd make a fortune!

Well a friend last week said I should open a bookshop..... , ARE THEY MAD!!
I'm not selling my books, not till I've read them all that is, about 7 years by my estimation

PS....I somehow do know what I have and roughly where it is, it's my 'brain-training'

I agree Liz! People are always telling me I should open a bookshop but why on earth would I want to do that for?! I've got to read them all first!
