I have just finished my fourth challenge book - Tipping The Velvet. I enjoyed it - would definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it. _________________ My Blog

I started reading Notes from Underground by Dostoevsky yesterday. I got to page 25 and had to stop - I may try again but I had no idea what was going on. Has anyone else thought the same? It's basically a man ranting to himself and though it's very funny in places I found myself getting wound up like he does. So have put this to one side for now...Then I picked up another on the list and on my TBR, which is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S Thompson.
I loved the film and this has been sitting on my shelf for well over a year! So far so good! I'm already further than the Dostoevsky !

I have just started The Virgin in the Garden by A S Byatt. I have read another of hers called Possession which I enjoyed but was a long time ago, but have high hopes of this one.
I recently finished The Poisonwood Bible which I enjoyed and would recommend. |

Like Water for Chocolate was really good and I'd definitly recommend it of you're working your way through the list. It was very unusual and I can see why it is part of the 1001.....
Not sure what to go for next though.....maybe the Godfather? |

I decided to go for "talk of the town" by Ardal O'Hanlon as it was quite short and looked interesting. I thought it would be funny seeing as he is a comedian, and it was funny (just not in the way I imagined) but it was also quite gritty. Not very plot driven but I enjoyed it nontheless and thought it was very believeable.
Not sure what to go for next...... |

I am reading 'Regeneration' now by Pat Barker which will be my fourth challenge book. I am really enjoying it, I don't normally like novels set in wartime but this one is an exception! Will prob read the rest of the trilogy. _________________ Currently reading: The Human Stain by Philip Roth

I think my next one off the list will be The Godfather, but I haven't decided yet. I had hoped to read two each month, but I slipped up this month _________________ My Blog

I realised the other night that Memoirs of a Geisha is on the 1001 list. I wasn't going to bother reading it as I have Book of Lost Things on TBR but I changed my mind.
I got Geisha in Oxfam for £3 Didn't realise how thick it was _________________ Currently reading: Man in the Dark by Paul Auster |

I'm pleased it's a book group choice as have had it on tbr for ages. I tend to only have time each month to read book group choices. I read the opening chapter of the book and it captivated me straightaway. I think it'll be one to relish. Looking forward to finding out. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

Have just finished The Godfather, I had no idea it was on the 1001 list so am pleased to make it my third book since discovering the challenge.
I read Memoires of a Geisha about 7-8 yrs ago and saw the film recently - I remember thinking how wonderfully Golden captured the women in the novel. I may re-visit it this month to join in the discussion. _________________ Reading: The Devil and Miss Prym by Paulo Coelho

Well, it was VERY hard going for the first half, lots of allusions to other classical stories and authors I did not know, as well as Elizabeth I who the title is about. It is described as a clever novel but it seemed too clever for me! Or perhaps I am not clever enough! That said, after the first half it did concentrate more on the story and various members of a family, and became a fairly good book but all in all, I could have passed it by quite happily. But, I persevered so it's another one off the list, and I am now reading The Fingersmith.
Picked up The Sea by John Banville recently too so that may be soon! |

I've not read that many on the 1001 list and most of those were when I was a kid. The more modern one's I've read I found pretty ordinary, guess they weren't my cup of tea. Haven't heard of the vast majoirty of the list but I'm going to make a bit of an effort to read the Jules Verne and HG Wells books. _________________ Currently reading: Adept

Finished and enjoyed The Fingersmith, must go and read what you all said about it when you did it for the month's book.
(Am now reading The Beach by Alex Garland which is a "travellers" novel set in the Phillipines. So far so good, easy to read but waiting for the main part of the story to start!) Ignore this last paragraph - thought it was a 1001 book but it's not |

I read it a few months ago Nic, whilst I enjoyed the story and loved Lucy, I did feel that it dragged a little in places. I would love to see it made into a film. One of the better 1001s that I have read.
