Yes I found the end quite muddled and I couldn't quite keep up with the passage of time but essentially I thought it was a good idea. Not the story I had expected anyway.

Thats another 1001 book of the list.

Maybe its because you feel you have to??

I've felt like this a couple of times on my quest to read all the Bookers. Its easier with the 1001 list tho because there's such a good mix of books.

Very much so but just haven't the time or energy to read. Actually, that's an excuse, to be honest I just keep forgetting about the challenge. I haven't even checked what I should be reading!

In case it helps anyone - I keep any books I have on my TBR that are from the 1001 list in a separate section on the shelf, then I always know which challenge books I have to hand and whether I fancy any of them as my next read. As a lot of them are quite heavy going I tend to space them out but this way I know what I have.

I let the challenge slide during my sabbatical although I did read Never Let Me Go, a few months ago...I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would though

I'm glad the challenge has been extended until the end of 2008!

I've looked at the list and plan to read:

On Beauty – Zadie Smith
The Light of Day – Graham Swift
Fingersmith – Sarah Waters
Unless – Carol Shields
White Teeth – Zadie Smith
The Blind Assassin – Margaret Atwood
Enduring Love – Ian McEwan
The Virgin Suicides – Jeffrey Eugenides
The Secret History – Donna Tartt
The Black Dahlia – James Ellroy
The Handmaid’s Tale – Margaret Atwood
The Color Purple – Alice Walker
The Shining – Stephen King
The Godfather – Mario Puzo
The Bell Jar – Sylvia Plath
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest – Ken Kesey
The Talented Mr. Ripley – Patricia Highsmith
Lolita – Vladimir Nabokov
Day of the Triffids – John Wyndham
Love in a Cold Climate – Nancy Mitford
The Pursuit of Love – Nancy Mitford
Cold Comfort Farm – Stella Gibbons
All Quiet on the Western Front – Erich Maria Remarque

Hopefully I will get to read them all at some point during the year, but I'll let you know in December.  I've read some of the list already, but I guess we're not counting ones that we read prior to the challenge?

That's right, books read prior to the challenge don't count, but we'll let you off the ones you read in 2007 considering the challenge started a year ago!

So are we starting a new count from 0 this year or combining 2007 and 2008?

With the 22 books off the list I read last year I've now read 65 books off the list and I have quite a few more on TBR. Hopefully some of our BB choices will be on the list too!!

I don't know, I suppose we can do whatever we fancy! I'm starting a fresh count this year to compare to last year's attempt.

Perhaps we should do both, fresh count for this year to compare with last and a cumulative total? Or is that just me avoiding making a decision??!

I am planning to read either White Teeth - Zadie Smith or Secret History - Donna Tartt next so that will start me off!

I must read more this year, only did 6 last year... I'm off to a good start though as I'm reading Sense & Sensibility right now!

Let me know what you think to it Jo. Just finished it. Are you watching the BBC adaptation?

I've decided to be ambitious and aim to get the number of books I've read from the 1001 list past the 100 mark this year (the total number obviously not teh number I read this year     ).

I'm on 67 already so only 33 to go.....

Is that the total of books you've read for and before the challenge, Nic?

Yep, that's the total number I've read including the ones from last year's challenge, this year's challenge and the ones I had read before starting.

I wonder if I'll ever get through them all???

I've just started All Quiet On The Western Front (last night).  So far, it is really really good.  It's quite short as well - 207 pages, so perhaps a good choice for anyone doing the challenge.

I went through the 1001 list again yesterday to update my own list and found that I had read more than I originally thought! Hurrah!   The only thing is I also realised that I own a load more of the 1001 that I haven't read. At first I felt guilty but then I started to feel encouraged as I'll not need to spend out much more money for the time being....although I did go on the book people website and am tempted by their fiction collections!...I really am an addict!
