I'm with you on that, I can barely look down long enough to read directions, never mind a book in the car!

Unfortunately I also do not have the time to read in chunks. At the moment I'm getting to read for about 1/2 hour when Kiran goes to bed as I have to sit next to him until he falls asleep - so that's an added bonus until he grows out of this phase! Other than that I also try to read in the evenings. If I can get the chance to sit down before 9pm, then I'll read solidly until I go to bed, otherwise like as has been said already it's between 10 - 40 mins in bed before I fall asleep.

It can also depend on the book, if it's particularly good then I'll dip in and out of it whenever I get 5 mins during the day.

That happened to me. I tried lying down to read A Simple Act of Violence (600 pager) with one hand and it inevitably fell on my head. Tell you what, I've toned arms after reading that one

Sarah, I often fidget through films as well. I'm terrible at the cinema. Sometimes I drift off and watch everyone else watching the film.

I read mostly in decent chunks, over breakfast -at  lunchtime and bedtime. Anytime in between that I can grab a moment too.

I suppose both. If I have time I read it long chunks and if not I just fit time for a quick read whenever I can. Seeing as I have a lot of time these days it tends to be long chunks

Yes!

And more often just stay up later than intended just because I'm really into it. Usually end up stopping when I realise that it's the third time I've nodded off and I'm not really managing to keep up with the story!

Yes I have done! For me it's a sign of a very good book if I can stay up to read it as I am a girl who loves her sleep! I must admit a book like that doesn't come along that often for me though.

I've read a couple of Mark Billingham crime books this year, they are good (bad?) for keeping me up late reading
I have another of his on my TBR pile~ Lazybones.

I also really like it when I have less than 100-pages or so of any book left, I look forward to setting aside some time to finish it off all in one chunk.

I do this all the time!
And doze off waking myself up when I drop the book. Sometimes I have to re-read the last few pages in the morning as I forgot the ending.

I'm very naughty and stay up late most nights as it's the only time I get to myself. So most of my reading during the week is done around midnight. But I know that's not answering the question. Birdsong kept me up late a few years ago, I just had to finish it even though I knew I'd be knackered at work the next day.

This happens to me when I'm really engrossed in a book.

I also love my sleep and really suffer if I don't get enough. This combined with the fact that Kiran still wakes regularly in the night (either several times for a couple of minutes so I'm up and down like a yo-yo, or otherwise lots of screaming and playing me up for a couple of hours in one chunk.), means that I need to prioritise sleep over everything else..... however sometimes the books win!

Yes, if I really want to finish a book, I'll sit up to read it all.  I always read in bed, but find that my eyes soon close, so if I really really want to finish the book then I do it before bed!

Ooh I also have Birdsong in my TBR pile.  I have been duly warned of its make-you-stay-up-late qualities

Oh definitely, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Let me know when you're reading it.

Dear Reader...

...Do you read to stretch your thinking? Give an example.

Yes definitely!

I read classics to stretch my mind in a more academic sense.

I've recently read books set in the time of the 2nd world war from varying different perspectives (Sarah's Key, Captain Corelli's Mandolin and The Book Thief) and they've all given me new insights to that period in time.

My current theme of Afghanistan and surrounding areas has given me lots of new information about a region I know little about. From this it's prompted me to read more non-fiction books. A latest acquistion is a book about the origins of the Middle East from the Ottoman Empire, to the creation of Israel through to date.

I used to read lots of non-fiction and don't so much any more (I'm not sure why not, just too carried away by fiction atm!). But books that stretched my thinking were Shopped - Joanna Blythman, A Life Stripped Bare - Leo Hickman, Not on the Label - Felicity Lawrence and Fast Food Nation - Eric Schlosser. To name just a couple!!

I could go on but I'll stop there!

Yes I do. The first book that I can remember really doing this to me and making me think was The Diary of Anne Frank when i was a little, my mum asked me to read it when i was moaning about how horrible my life was because I couldn't have everything I wanted all the time ie £60 trainers for PE and not being allowed to stay out as long as I wanted etc   and all I could say was point made!! That was about 13 years ago and I still think about it all the time now.

1984 (which I am currently re-reading for this months choice) and Brave New World also really made me think when we studied them in college and most recenlty Birdsong has really made me think as well.

I also try and read classics to challenge myself as since I stopped studying I had slipped into only reading 'chick lit' for a while, which is nice when you just want to relax or after you've read something heavy but i felt that it was time to start 'stretching my thinking' a little! Anyway I think i've rambled on enough lol
