Seeing there is at least a week before the May choice kicks in, I decided to give 'Time Traveler's Wife' a go. Am hooked already, so much so I'm going to stop babbling on here and go and read. Will write my review as soon as I'm finished. _________________ My Swap List

My family are worried about me, I'm on page 221 already and haven't said more than 3 words since I picked up this book. Love it so far! _________________ My Swap List

I'm the opposite Mazzystar, I'm only 200 pages in and finding it really hard to get into. Hoping to finish it by the end of tomorrow though! _________________ Swap List: http://tinyurl.com/33pg6r

Must admit I found all the dates confusing and spent loads of time holding the book open in front of me but staring into space, lost in thought, trying to work it all out (never was good with numbers!).
It didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book tho as I love a challenge! _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

I read it last year and loved it. I didn't really have a problem getting into it or understanding the time travel or time bits, probably because I read a fair bit of science fiction.
Spoiler:
it was such a moving book, I was in tears when he died. And got so angry with the teacher when Alba wanted to go see her dead dad and the silly bureaucrat nearly stopped her!

Yes Amie, I remember feeling like that towards the teacher. It's such a moving book and cleverly written, I was in tears too. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

I've just finished this book and gave it 5 stars, here's why:
Spoiler:
Well what can I say, this book literally tore my heart out emotionally. I've just stopped crying after 30 minutes of 'I love you's' and 'don't leave me's', in my husband's arms.
This book struck a million cords with me ... I loved the way Henry and Clare spoke to each other and how they felt about each other "I hate to be where she is not, when she is not. And yet, I am always going, and she cannot follow." (Henry). I loved the way they made love (there have been few occasions where the thought of a 41 year old man and 18 year old woman making love has not made me feel queasy, this was one of them). I love the moment when Alba is conceived (the three in bed scenario!) when he says 'in this moment I love her more than life'. I love when they find their perfect lottery-funded house and Clare describes that she feels 'that we have found our home'. I felt so sad at the description of Henry's loss and then of Clare's loss of their Mothers. My first tears came after Henry first sees Alba as a 10 year old ... he hears that he is dead in 'real time' and tries to get to Clare, but it's too late. From that point on I was pretty much an emotional wreck.
I felt the characters were so real, I cared for them and therefore I cared for their loss.
I loved that she was waiting for him, always ... even as an 82 year old woman, and that he was always wanting to be back in her arms. I loved the way he watched her and just adored her in every way.
Finally, I liked the way Audrey Niffenegger ended her acknowlegements 'I waited for you, and now you're here'.
A wonderful, wonderful, heart-breaking book.

Love your review Mazzystar! I like how you scattered quotations throughout it. You can just tell how much you've loved TTW. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

Finally finished it and I quite enjoyed it once I got into it and would actually love to see the film when it comes out.
Spoiler:
Although I didn't cry the main parts I found upsetting were... Henry knowing when he was going to die, especially the night of the party when he spoke to Gomez, thought that moment between the two men was lovely and something I'll never forget!
I also got very upset when Clare kept having miscarriages and I really empathised with her situation.
The one thing I feel I would have liked to know more about (and I know I'm not alone here) is how did Alba deal with the time travel as she grew up? Was she cured or did she even want to be cured? As the author did not write an epilogue, I'm hoping for a sequel!
I'm going to give it 3*'s as I did enjoy it but found it confusing at times, and probably wouldn't read it again. _________________ Swap List: http://tinyurl.com/33pg6r

I agree that there's definitely scope for a sequel, exactly what I thought Melissa. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

Been thinking, one thing I didn't understand was:
Spoiler:
why was Henry unable to time travel from when Clare was 18 (when she lost her virginity) to when she was 20 and met Henry in the library ... have I missed the very obvious answer to this question?!
Thanks. _________________ My Swap List

Do you know, I remember thinking the same! I have no idea! I also didn't get how
Spoiler:
he worked out when he would/had time travelled and drew up that list.
Mind you it's ages since I read it, and I can't remember a lot of it. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

I understood that he couldn't choose where and when he travelled to? Maybe I'm wrong?
Spoiler:
You're right Mel and I think Glynis has it too. Only Alba could kinda choose where she wanted to go.
I always thought it was a bit strange that when she did meet him in the library that day he seemed pretty clueless and you'd think if he's been time travelling since a young age he'd have realised that events like meeting Alba when he was with Ingrid and Clare knowing who he was would have something to do with time travelling.
When Henry meets Clare in the library he is actually meeting her for the first time because all the occasions he time-travelled to her childhood hadn't happened yet - they happen later on in HIS life - that is why he doesn't recognise her.
