Hot on the heels of Shropshire Blue's competition, heres another just for fun...

I will describe a character from a novel and you have to guess who they are and what book(s) they appear in-theres 11 characters, some obvious, some not so....remember its just for fun....

1)This short person is invited on a journey by a wise old friend and has lots of adventures which include hanging out with other, shorter people and playing a game of riddles in the dark for a piece of precious jewellry.Name the short person and the novel he stars in...(Easy one to start with a couple of hints thrown in there!)

2)This successful author returns to his home town where he finds himself still drawn towards the local haunted house after many years away. When several of the towns people become terminally ill,he and a group of friends(one of whom is a priest)find themselves fighting to survive in this homage to a classic.Name the successful author and the book he appears in...

3)This retired police superintendent who once almost made it to the runner-ups of the olympics representing his country in the crossbow event,is called back to head a task force of mounties when a killer begins taking the heads of their female murder victims in Vancouver. The police super previously lost his wife and daughter in a hostage incident and is still haunted by their loss.Name the superintendent and the book that introduces us to him.(might be a hard one this)

4)This character met his wife when she was six and there was a thirty year age diffrence but married her with only an 8 year age diffrence and has a habit of disappearing on her without telling her where hes going.Who is this inconsiderate sod and what book does he feature in?(another easy peasy one)

5)This character is an apprentice to a master who is allergic to his own trade and sets off to find a cure for him encountering all manner of increasingly strange companions on the way;including a demon rejected from his home for being too nice. His adventures include trying not to drown in a vat of custard, trying to lose the affections of a paticulary amorous unicorn and avoiding the attention of the Grim Reaper himself.Who is he and what series of books does he feature in...

6)This police detective works in a police precint with an aptly named black detective and a colleague who could have stepped straight out of catch 22,is married to a wife who is a deaf mute and has twins-one boy,one girl.He is almost always described as blonde, athletic and italian looking.who is he and what series of police procedurals does he appear in?

7)This professor of religious iconology travels to a very religious city when it is threatened by a terroist threat at a paticulary sensitive time.He has to defeat an ancient sect by solving a series of cryptic puzzles but who is he and what is this novel?

8)This character prefers the night, hangs out in New Orleans, often dresses in old fashioned clothing ,wears purple tinted glasses and likes a lot of iron in his diet and has been around a long time.Who is he and which set of chronicles does he feature in?

9)This character has a keen sense of smell and a beautiful coat.He escapes from a laboratory pursued by a goverment funded experiment and is adopted by an ex-military man and a painter.Who is he and what book am I talking about?

10)This character is one of five sisters who falls in and out of love with her future suitor much to the exasperation of her ma and da.His assistance following the elopement of her sister helps the two finally come together-who is she,who is her suitor and what is the book?

I have either made these incredibly easy or really hard or a combination of both....we will have to see. Will reveal the answers in about 10 days or so so see how many you can get....

well you did better than some of the others and some of the characters are a little tricky-tried to pick the best known titles from my HUGE collection of books but made a couple a little more difficult so it'd be more of a challenge but theres one there that only Treez has got spot on and then only because she "hedged her bets"......will give it a few more days because i am liking seeing you guys and gals struggle.......

Yup I got a bit bored so decided to play around. Had tried it before but obviously did something wrong as they weren't showing up but managed to get the stars to work so we're stuck with them

So if anyone else wants sparkly stars saying "I won a BB quiz" this one is still open

D

P.S. Happy Birthday for tomorrow!

I've just realised that if you multiply that by two, you'll get the correct answer, Sparky. Now, don't use the calculator, dear!

Great day, Glynis. Went to the Science museum with the kids and hubby made Sunday lunch and every other meal too. Just remembered at last minute to catch Jane - wasn't disappointed - and then caught a bit of the Reader I Married Him series on BBC4 about our literary heroes. Not a bad day all in all.

It sounds super-dooper Treez (as my little one has learnt to say) and fab-a-rooney

I forgot to watch Jane Eyre - too busy getting last year's winter clothes from the loft and trying them all on! I wasn't even being a busy babbler!

Well I'm glad you had a great birthday and enjoy the rest of your day! Gx

okay heres the answers and the results....

1)BILBO BAGGINS from Tolkien's The Hobbit
He discovers the Ring in caves under a mountain where it has been lost by Gollum and has to play a game of riddles to escape with his prize. He later passes the Ring onto his nephew Frodo for Lord Of The Rings....

2)BEN MEARS from 'Salem's Lot by Stephen King

3)ROBERT DE CLERQ from Headhunter by Michael Slade, the pseudynom for a trio of Canadian lawyers- a well reccommended book.If you like gritty crime thrillers like those by P.J.Tracey you're pretty likely to like this series of novels of which this was the first. Will post more details of this series at a later stage here and on RISI because this is a series which doesn't deserve to be missed and am surprised that more people havben't heard of it though the books were published quite a while ago....

4)Yes it's HENRY from Audrey Niffenigger's novel The Time Traveller's Wife.Funniest post I ever read about this author on a book forum site I once visited(not risi)wasa that someone didn't want to read her book because her name was racist-still not sure whether the poster was being serious or not but got the sad impresson he was actually for real....

5)WUNTVOR from The Ebeneezer trilogy then The Ballard Of Wuntvor trilogy by Craig Shaw Gardener-a very funny series of books which make a welcome change to Pratchett

6)STEVE CARELLA from the 87th precint books by Ed McBain, the black detective is Arthur Brown and the detective who sounds like he's from catch 22 is Meyer Meyer(not major major who is in catch 22)

7)yes it's DR.ROBERT LANGDON from the book Angels And Demons and later Da Vinci Code

8)LESTAT from Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles

9)EINSTEIN-a golden retriever from the novel Watchers by Dean Koontz,a very intelligent dog who leads his two adopted owners(adopted by him not them) through a perilous pursuit when he is chased by a secret goverment experiment who has also escaped and shares a psychic bond of sorts.Avery gripping and entertaining novel, one of his best, but please avoid the film starring Corey Haim-its not good!!!

10)ELIZABETH BENNET and MR.DARCY from Pride And Prejudice by Jane Austen-Vicky loves this book and the film to bits though I got reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaalllllly bored watching this at cinema last year-where were the car chases and how come Keira Knightly never got her bits out?You just know I only sat through it because I fancy the pants off Keira!!lol

winner was BLUEFLOWER-well done, very pleased that you got 7 exactly right!!

commiserations go to SHROPSHIRE BLUE(3 1/2)
LOVELY TREEZ(5)
ZANTHEWITCH(4)

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL,KNOW IT WAS A LITTLE TRICKY BUT WELL DONE EVERYONE!!!
