The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman loved the whole His dark materials series, definitely keepers for me

One Good Turn by Kate Atkison
Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier - a bit of a slowburner for me, I think I preferred the film

The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami
The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain

I totally agree with your thoughts on the Brontes I haven't read Crow Lake but if I like Other Side of the Bridge I'll probably read it too.
I have to admit that I wasn't too fussed about Philip Pullman's stuff. I loved Northern Lights but the other two didn't seem to match up to it. Quite an interesting concept though and some vivid characters. _________________ Currently reading: Man in the Dark by Paul Auster |

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova - I loved this one, went on to read Bram Stokers Dracula
The People's Act of Love by James Meek – This is a bit strange. It was interesting to read and communities like the one in the book did really exist in Russia and other parts of Europe.
