It was my little one's 5th birthday and I got her 3 new books as part of her birthday parcel and they all were very favorably received at bedtime last night.

Stick Man - Julia Donaldson - her latest - I have some firm JD favourites, we have all her other books, but A Squash and A Squeeze, The Smartest Giant in Town and Room on the Broom are currently our Top 3, my OH loves them too as does my 8 yr old son.  This one is very promising, great illustrations as usual and terrific rhyming text.

The Cat in the Hat - Dr Seuss - We have had The Cat in the Hat Comes Back in our collection for ages so thought it was high time we got the first one in the series!  I just love this as does Eva and it's particularly good for her to practice reading words on her own too whilst I read it to her.  You certainly have to have your wits about you whilst reading it as the pace is fast and furious - great fun.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll - illustrated by Helen Oxenbury - this is apparently for 9-12 yr olds to read alone but my just turned 5 yr old loved the first chapter read aloud, the illustrations are very appealing, Alice as a fairly up to date child (but nothing too jarringly modern) and a decent sized print.  She loved the Pippi Longstocking book illustrated by Lauren Child so this seemed on the same level and fingers crossed she'll remain interested - it really is a lovely edition - would make a nice gift for that unmentionable time of year!?

I'll have to look out for the Julia Donaldson one for that "unmentionable time of the year"! Laurence loves Room on the Broom, The Gruffalo and various others that we've had from the library. It's also his 4th birthday on 22nd Dec, so got to get my thinking cap on...!

Happy birthday to Eva too!

Happy Birthday to Eva! We love the JD books in our house and own them all except this one, shall have to put it on Rachel's Christmas and Birthday list!

Cat in the Hat - one of the best ever books for kids - you ask mine now they are grown up - they still remember it!
and Lewis Carol is one of my favorites too, loved reading this as a child. Good choices Treez
