|
|
A question has been posed as to whether or not we are going to host another read-a-long once the current one (wild swans) is finished. I am quite happy to go along with this but first we need suggestions.....Amie has proposed Gone With The Wind but has anyone else got any ideas they would like to suggest...?
I would like to propose War And Peace as I have never read it and this would be a great incentive to do so. Anyone with suggestions, please mention below or P.M me and when we have a few potential books, I can hold a poll to see what we choose again. Wild Swans I think has been a big success among those of us who have taken part and generated some interesting discussion. I would love to see this continue with a new book choice so get your thinking caps on people...

| I've heard that War and Peace is confusing at the best of times beacause there are so many characters - I cant decide whether I think it would be easier to handle at a chapter a week or not actually. |

I'm half way through war and peace and I'm finding it a bit confusing at times, I can never remember who are brother and sister and who are lovers! _________________ Kill the tbr - currently 124

Oooh - keep your knick knacks on, I was only saying!
Hurrah, I've missed you using that sexy lady!
My suggestion would be the Poisonwood Bible but I've always wanted to read Gone with the Wind too. |

Right I have had a think and come up with some ideas. However, I quite like the Posionwood Bible nomination. I have attempted War and Peace three times. The first was an older translation and quite difficult to follow, the 2nd a newer translation which was a little easier but I got a bit bored with it about a third of the way through. Then I got it as a taking book on CD but got the same point as the book then gave it up. I though I would like it as I had read Anna Karenina and like it, but didn't gel with War and Peace at all. It is very long and you do need staying power.
I have Gone with the Wind as well on my tbr.
So my suggestions may be a bit heavy going -:
The Dark Room Rachel Seiffert. Story about three Germans in Nazi Germany.
Things Fall Apart - Chinua Achebe. This novel describes the historical tragedy caused by the arrival of the British in Igboland, Nigeria. I read it a few years ago and was once again ashamed of British actions abroad.
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Alskandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn. Life in a Stalinist labour camp in 1951.
and lastly
Dantes Inferno. This book is quoted and used in other books quite a bit but I have never read the book itself.
Me thinks I thought to much and have maybe thrown too many books into the pot. |

I've read three of those four. The Dark Room is superb, really excellent, although I'd have thought it was a bit short for a readalong?
Things Fall Apart was again excellent, really made me think.
One Day in the Life of Denisovich is one of my favourite ever books, but again it's very short, and if I recall correctly isn't organised into chapters.
Dante's Inferno, I've got the Divine Comedy on my tbr and would love to read it sometime, I was planning to read that when I've finished War and Peace. _________________ Kill the tbr - currently 124

I'd love to read some of those books considered so far. I haven't really read many very long books and so I'd definitely join in the next readalong! My nominations would be:
Anna Karenina
A Suitable Boy
Gone With The Wind
I know they've all been mentioned already, but I can't think of any others to add at the moment! _________________ Currently Reading:
