Got this from the sheffield meet yesterday, sat down to read a bit and couldn't put it down........

finished it this morning with tears running down my face!

It tells the story of Sam, a young eleven year old with lukemia, who begins writing an account of his life with things he wishes to achieve before the end, interesting facts he has discovered and philosphical questions to which he strives to find the answers- such as what happens when we die and why does god make little children ill?

Its a short read, and an easy read written in the style of an 11 year old boy, but it is a hard read to swallow and very emotional! A real tear-jerker! I am so glad that I got this and was an excellent choice to get from our lucky dip! I don't think I would have stumbled across it if it hadn't been for the meet yesterday and I am feeling sad just thinking of it now- it has had that much of an effect!

Once you have read it, you really just want to hold tight to your kids and give them a hug and think thank god they have their health.

The book ends as you might expect but that doesn't make it less heart-renching or poignant.

I have just checked this out on Amazon, but despite what you have said and the reviews that say it is a must read, I am not sure that I am brave enough to read this, particularly at the moment as I am not going through the happiest time in my life.

However I do think that it maybe a good book to read with children to  prepare them for the fact that death is part of life and can happen at any age.  I think nowadays children are shielded from death a lot more than  children used to be in the past when they often lost siblings.  When researching  my own family history I came across at lot of funeral cards belonging to my grandmother.  Her sister had seven children, six who died before reaching twenty. But that was normal then.  So maybe for the first time in history we need to educated children about life and death and books like this may help.
