Discuss here your thoughts on the book once you have read it. Did you (not) enjoy it? Anything that struck you or maybe someone else could help if you have a question? We're not really looking for in depth discussions... just tell us what you think of it!

For those who have read the book, please choose a star rating based on how much you liked it.

If you do have something to post that may ruin the plot for others, please remember to use the spoiler function (Details: http://risibookclub.myfreeforum.org/ftopic12.php)

I have already read this and loved it, but partly because the era was that of my childhood. I've heard that it's fairly autobiographical which is a good thing in my book, I like biography and reality.  But overall, what I loved were some of the lovely anecdotes typical of the time.

Hope those of you that read it enjoy it too!

Me too!  Now - do you read the book in June and discuss in July?  How does it normally work on here?

Hello Louise,

Things got a bit jumbled up this month, but normally we vote for the books in the previous month and then start to read from the 1st.  Comments can be posted at anytime, and all the discussions get archived so you can still add to them even if the alloted month is over...

I think there might be polls to vote for the July reads going up soon ?

Started to read this today; I have previously enjoyed both Number9dream and Cloud Atlas x

I decided not to read this one. I have read Cloud Atlas and did not enjoy it - it was one of those I read to the end and wished I had not bothered (I know lots of people loved it, but it did not have that effect on me!). Because of that and since I have a bit going on this month - plus lots to read where I already have the book - I thought I would skip this one.  Will be interested to read everyone elses thoughts who do read it though.

I read Cloud Atlas and didn't particularly enjoy it, but Black Swan Green is nothing like CA. It's set in 1982, is much more readable, amusing and a real trip down memory lane.

Welcome to BB Louise!! As Wonderlake pointed out (thanks Wonderlake!), we were late posting details of June's books - we normally request your nominations well in advance. I'm about to post polls for July's books. The two books with the most votes are posted in the main book group forum, together with new threads for each, on the 1st of each month. You can contribute to the discussion as soon as you've finished the book and yes, threads are archived but left open so you can add to discussions at a later date and/or revisit them. That way there's no pressure to read the chosen books in a month. I recently read The Wasp Factory, which was a featured title from last year, and posted in its archived discussion thread.

I hope that helps and isn't too confusing!

Finished this last night, and would probably give it 3.5 out of 5; at points I could really take it or leave it...

I think I'm a little too young (!, born 1980) for it to have stirred a nostalgia in me for Betamax video records etc... and maybe just generally that the narrator was a 13-year old boy- I didn't really get on with The Wasp Factory I think for the same reason.  Would a 13-year old girl narrator have been a lot more assured/ mature ?

My favourite part was the reappearance of
Spoiler:

Madame Crommelynck from Cloud Atlas.  However it made me want to go and re-read CA more than continue w/ BSG, especially as she disappears almost as soon as she appears.

Oh, I also didn't particularly fall in love with Le Grand Meaulnes when I read that recently.  I think certain books need to be read at certain times in your life in order for them to 'work' properly and strike a chord... ?

I agree with you there. I've often not enjoyed a book but don't totally give up on them, thinking I'll revisit them in time when I'm probably ready to appreciate them. It's funny, isn't it, how you can read a book again and it's like a totally different book?

I can understand you not getting on with Black Swan Green nostalgia wise. I'm enjoying it but not rushing to pick it up though. Need to get a move on as want to get on with July's books.
