|
|
Prompted by another thread, I thought I'd share my top 10 picture books as I have read plenty in my time as a mum with weekly library visits and working with children. There is something separate and special about this "genre" ( if I can call it that ) that I love. In no particular order:
The Cat who came to Tea - Judith Kerr
The Elephant and the Bad Baby - Elfrida Vipont and Raymond Briggs
The Very Hungry Caterpillar - Eric Carle
Each Peach, Pear, Plum - Janet Ahlberg
The Gruffalo - Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler
The Jolly Postman - Janet Ahlberg and Allan Ahlberg
My Colours - Stephen Tucker and Nick Sharratt
Faster, faster Little Red Train - Benedict Blathwayt
Peepo - Janet Ahlberg
Rumble in the Jungle - Giles Andreae
And there could be many, many more!

I recognise most of those Sarah even though my children are twice the ages of yours just about.
The first little red train book by Benedict Blathwayt (not sure of the actual title now) was one of our favourites and is one of a very small box of picture books that I kept.
Nick Butterworth (especially Thud and Percy Park-keeper) and Mick Inkpen were our biggest favourites in terms of authors I think.
As you say, once you start to think about it, the list endless! |

The simpler the better when they are as young and sweet as your nephew - they have just as much (if not more!) fun with the boxes and paper as they do with the actual toy. Books are great because you get to have a cuddle as the same time
When my two were small, the Mr Men Books were really popular and they still seem to be even now. I think Mr Tickle must have been the best value we got for under a pound! |

I LOVE The Tiger Who Came to Tea!
Found a book via the library that Charis and I enjoyed recently: Biscuit Bear (don't remember who by). The illustrations are pretty amazing and I like how Biscuit Bear 'makes' friends
She also liked Avocado Baby by (name escapes me again!) and the Emily Brown books. _________________ Reading: Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Hoeg

The Cat who Came to Tea ~ Judith Kerr
The Very Hungry Caterpillar ~ Eric Carle
Guess How Much I Love You ~ Sam McBratney
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? ~ Eric Carl
Mr. Men: My Complete Collection ~ Roger Hargreaves

Mog the Forgetful Cat ~ Judith Kerr
There was an Old Lady who swallowed a fly ~ Pam Adams
Old Macdonald Had a Farm ~ Pam Adams
I've given several copies of these to friends with kids too.
